Ascendancy Trials

Path of Exile 2 has two Ascendancy trials, and they ask completely different things of you. The Trial of the Sekhemas is a four-floor run where damage drains Honour and your route through the rooms is the strategy. The Trial of Chaos is a gauntlet of rounds where every round you clear forces you to pick a new affliction. Both are below, in full.

The Sekhemas floors

One Barya opens one run, and the Barya's area level decides how much of the trial that run contains — one floor below level 45, two from 45, three from 60, all four from 75.

The Chaos rounds

A Trial of Chaos runs 4 rounds, 7 rounds from area level 60 and 10 rounds from area level 75. Each round sets one of these objectives:

Trials FAQ

How many Ascendancy points can you get in Path of Exile 2?
Eight, awarded two at a time in four tranches. The two trials are interchangeable ladders rather than separate pools — you can take every tranche from the Trial of the Sekhemas, every tranche from the Trial of Chaos, or mix them.
Which trial is easier for Ascendancy points?
They fail in different ways. The Trial of the Sekhemas punishes chip damage, because everything you take drains Honour and Honour barely comes back — so it rewards not getting hit and picking a safe route through the rooms. The Trial of Chaos punishes fragility late, because every round you clear forces another challenge modifier onto you and they stack for the rest of the run. Ranged, evasive characters generally prefer the Sekhemas; tanky characters that can shrug off stacked modifiers prefer Chaos.
How do you open a Trial of the Sekhemas?
With a Barya. The campaign gives you Balbala's Barya; after that Djinn Baryas drop from level 24 onward, and the area level of the Barya decides how much of the trial you run — one floor below level 45, two from 45, three from 60, and all four floors from level 75.
How do you open a Trial of Chaos?
With an Inscribed Ultimatum, which the campaign gives you once and then drops from level 39 onward. Its area level sets the trial's length: four rounds at low levels, seven from area level 60, and ten from area level 75.
What is Honour in Path of Exile 2?
Honour is the Trial of the Sekhemas' own health bar. Damage you take inside the trial drains it, it carries across rooms and floors within a run, and running out ends the run immediately — which is a failed trial, not a death, so your character survives. Armour, Evasion and Energy Shield all still reduce or absorb Honour loss, and since patch 0.5.0 your maximum Runic Ward is added to your starting Honour.
What do relics do in the Trial of the Sekhemas?
Relics sit on the Relic Altar before a run and change the run itself — more maximum Honour, more Sacred Water, weaker monsters, better keys. They occupy a grid, so shape matters, and bigger relics roll stronger versions of the same modifiers: a Medium relic's maximum-Honour roll beats a Small one's at the same tier. You start with six altar slots and unlock up to eighteen.
